Dobby used to the a house elf to the malfoy family where he was treated poorly, up until Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving Dobby a book (the tom riddle diary) which contained a sock.

Upon elf belief, if a house elf is given any item of clothing then that house elf is freed from its services as a house elf. Dobby later went on to work in the kitchens at the Hogwarts school.
